MySpace, Facebook and Job Searching

Tuesday May 8, 2007
Did you know that your MySpace and Facebook profiles aren't as private as you think they are? Employers have been known to peruse MySpace and Facebook, along with blogs and web sites of prospective employees. The hiring manager may have an account or could even use alumni employees to gain access to check out an applicant for employment who attended the same college.

Some of the things that I've read on Facebook are things that no prospective employer should be reading. In fact, I've read some profiles of job seekers that made me cringe when I thought about what a hiring manager would think if he or she read them.

It's really important, when job searching, to presume that anyone may be able to read what you post online, and to be very careful what you say about your personal life and your activities. The same holds true when you're looking for a summer job or internship, as well as when you're seeking full-time employment. Remember, it's a good idea to make your account private, so you'll be able to limit access to your profile to those you want to see it.

These MySpace, Facebook, and blogging do's and don'ts will help you manage your job search and protect your privacy.

Also, here's some good advice from Champlain College faculty member Elaine Young on how to clean up your MySpace and Facebook accounts, so they can help rather than hinder your job search.

This caught my eye as my company has just launched DWC Faces - a “Facebook for Businesswomen” so that our members across the country can post business profiles which are searchable on the web. We believe that employers need to find something “legit” out there about you and not just your myspace page! See http://www.downtownwomensclub.com for more about the Downtown Women’s Club or http://www.dwcfaces.com to check out our “soft launch” of this new product. Our goal is to help you “put your best business face forward.”

In response to Diane’s comment, I Facebook for Businesswomen sounds like a wonderful opportunity for people to put thereselves out there in a positive manner. Employers should be encouraged to research their potential employees for the future benefit of both the company and the working enviornment.
